Morocco: Authorities investigate members over religious flyers

Writer: Caroline HoerenCaroline Hoeren

The Moroccan authorities have launched an investigation into religious flyers distributed by members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, raising concerns over the continued repression of religious minorities in the country.

Reports first surfaced on the Moroccan Facebook news page "التوجيه والاعلام - Houssam Moukrim" which has 792,000 followers. The post, which has garnered 7,400 likes, stated:

"Trending... Security alert in Ibn Greer. After the distribution of proselytizing flyers about the emergence of ‘the Awaited Mahdi,’ sources confirm that authorities have mobilized to track down the distributor and owner of these flyers, which contain an email address, a YouTube channel name, and a Facebook page.”

Additionally, the Moroccan news channel "Madar21 مدار" released a video report yesterday stating: "Proselytizing flyers about the emergence of the Awaited Mahdi in the city of Ben Guerir have mobilized the Moroccan authorities."

The report has now been picked up by several Moroccan News outlets.

It is outrageous that a peaceful expression of belief—distributing religious flyers—has triggered such an investigation. Members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Morocco are now in fear of being arrested. This follows the recent arrest and prosecution of two young members of the faith in February 2025 for distributing similar flyers.

We call on Moroccan authorities to immediately cease their repression of religious minorities and uphold freedom of belief and expression in accordance with international human rights standards.
